The founder of the Fairfield Baptist Church was Mr. Phil Phillips, a native of Rappahannock, Virginia. After moving to Richmond, Virginia, he became a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, located in Fulton, where he taught Sunday School for many years.
In June 1901, Mr Phillips rented a small place on Fairfield Road, now known as Ford Street. It is here that he established an afternoon Sunday School. A few years later, with God's help and the assistance of a few members, Mr. Phillips was able to purchase some property and erect a building in the same locations.
On December 15, 1905, the council that consisted of Reverend Johnson, Reverend Cook, Reverend Haskins, and Reverend Ferguson, who was Mr. Phillips' pastor, met at 2129 Fairfield Avenue to ordain him. Being satisfied that Mr. Phillips was qualified to carry the gospel, the council approved his ordination, and thus the Fairfield Baptist Church was established. Reverend Phillips served the church for thirty-two years. He passed away at the age of seventy-six. After Reverend Phillips' death, a storefront was rented at Seventeenth and Fairfield Streets. The church later moved to North Second Street.
In 1945, the move was made to 103 E. Canal Street and finally to the corner of Second @ Canal Street, formerly known as "Penitentiary Bottom". Reverend C.W. Jones became the Pastor in May of 1949. After the passing of Rev. Jones in 1962, Reverend George N. Tyler became our pastor. Membership increased to about 50.
We moved to our current location in June 1963. Among the many sons and daughters licensed and ordained by Rev. Tyler, he embraced Rev. Taylor as an adopted son of this church.
After pastoring for 39 Years, Rev. Tyler went home to be with the Lord on May 30, 2002. His wife, Elizabeth Tyler, transitioned in March 2004. While awaiting God's direction, Rev. Randolph Burt served as Interim Pastor.
After a long and prayerful search. The Lord sent us Rev. Bobby E. Holmes. The strides that Fairfield made under his 10-year leadership are too numerous to list, but know that God blessed Fairfield tremendously during Rev. Holmes' tenure. Rev. Darrell E. Taylor was ordained, and Rev. Annesto Younger has been licensed and ordained under his leadership.
Senior Pastor, Rev. Darrell E. Taylor, was installed in January 2017, becoming the 6th Full-Time Pastor in the 120-year history of the church. Our Servant Leader Ministry has increased and has been consolidated into one cohesive unit.
